There’s a 13 year old and a 75 year old, bands with siblings and bands with spouses. This year’s Top 50 pulls from all corners of the alternative landscape, from folky and indie to dancey and awash with synth, pop and underground to punk and funk and protest, representing seven different countries. After a lot of debate, we’ve narrowed our list down to twelve months of outstanding releases from the planet’s biggest bands and others still finding their audience, bands who have been around for over a half century, artists celebrating milestones, and rookies still touring on their first LP. This decade, we’ve cataloged around 400 or so of the best alternative and indie songs, revisited some of the most popular tracks of the year and introduced new songs to new audiences, and uncovered some hidden gems that deserved a bunch of sunlight.Ģ019 was a fantastic way to end the 2010s. But we welcome in 2020 with the eighth annual Top 50, the best alternative and indie songs from the past year. We won’t say the “end of the decade”, because that will come a year from now. Take me right to the Spotify and YouTube playlists.
